The relationship between the UK and the EU has always been a complex one. Throughout the years, UK membership appeared to be defined by its half-in, half-out status, with the UK successfully negotiating several opt-outs of the European treaties. In 2016, the question of ‘in or out’ was answered by out, and the UK started the procedure to leave the European Union.

 

Does it open the European political project to constitutional renegotiation?

Will it pull the EU towards more flexibility and more membership options or will it lead to an ever-closer union?
