Human Rights

The European Union is based on a set of shared values. However, they are not always fully respected. In the past year, thousands of young people have shared their ideas on how to promote and protect citizens and those fighting for our rights.

Now is the time to put the spotlight on local organisations, projects and individuals who are passionate about this issue.

Fair tax settlement for digital nomads

The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the paradigm of work. While many people lose several hours in commuting between their home and office, always having to live in areas close to it, telecommuting has enabled people to explore the world while working on a laptop computer with internet access. As attractive as a life free of obligations and with more flexibility in finding a place to live can be, digital nomads bring enormous problems to the local host communities, such as increased pressure on natural resources and services, increased housing prices due to higher wages as a rule, and, as a result, a widening social gap. In order to make community life fairer, and to avoid abuses in taxation, this proposal was created: Article 1 Definition of Fiscal Residence 1 - Establish clear criteria for determining the tax residence of digital nomads, considering factors such as length of stay in the country, family ties and permanent residence. 2 - Consider as eligible for tax purposes all those who stay for a period equal to or longer than 32 consecutive days. Article 2 Taxation Rules for Digital Nomads 1 - All citizens in who are considered digital nomads and who fit the criteria of article 1 may choose for one of two regimes: a) payment of taxes in the country of residence like national citizens b) Paying user regime. In this regime the citizen is charged for the public service she uses. Article 3 Collaboration Between Countries 1 - Promote international cooperation for sharing information on taxation of digital nomads. Article 4 Awareness and Education 1 - Conducting awareness campaigns aimed at informing digital nomads about their tax obligations in their country of residence and helping them understand tax regulations and processes. Article 5 Enforcement and Penalties 1 - Strengthen enforcement of digital nomads' tax obligations through audits, states and cooperation with businesses. 2 - Establish penalties at the European level for those who do not comply with their tax obligations.

Fight against flags of convenience! A centralized database for European vessels

Flags of convenience facilitate illegal activities in the ocean, such as IUU fishing, human trafficking, pirating and low tax payments. The current registration processes and lack of history track on flags of convenience are not effective. Therefore, a directive should be drafted and implemented, obliging all European vessels to be registered in a centralized database, in order to keep a tracking history of all the flags registry. However, this database would not have the option of leaving any empty year field (similar to the rules applying to the planes' registration).

End the right to abortion in Europe

The EU should end the right to abortion.

Abortion is one of the biggest human rights violations in Europe and in the history. Abortion is in contrary to EU charter of fundamental rights Article 2. Every unborn and born deserves protection of the right to life. We must end abortion in order to respect human rights and Article 2.  The United States had a huge victory when Roe V Wade was overturned. Europe will follow the same path and give a voice to the voiceless. We the youth, we will never stop fighting until every unborn enjoys the right to life. We are the pro-life generation!

Introduce immigration program for non-refugees

We have demographic issues within the Europe and we seek more labors - both white collars like doctors, IT engineer or teachers, but as well blue collars like plumber, construction workers or electricians. At the same time, people outside Europe what’s to make a change in their lives and start a new chapter in Europe due to socioeconomical issues. Let’s create a program where people can sign up to come to Europe, learn local language and needed profession in specific region. Let’s say a Palestinian woman from a camp in Lebanon seeks better future and she is ready to move to Sweden, learn Swedish language and get education to become a nurse. EU member state could have a controlled list of such candidates and allow such candidates come to the country under controlled circumstances to learn the language, learn the specific needed profession and fill the gap in the country. It can prevent waves of uncontrolled migration of people who seeks better future because now they could have a legal opportunity to do in in a human way. We already have so called “EU blue card” which could be extended!

Safe migration routes

If we talk about establishing safe migration routes, we mostly focus on economic migrations and possibilities to absorb migrants effectively into the labour market with measurements such as the European Blue Card. But we have to keep in mind that many people leave for individual or collective safety reasons. We could introduce a form of asylum procedure that examines the rights and needs of people in conflict regions before they start their escape. Because if their application for asylum is successful or they are allowed to be protected subsidiarily the European Union could organise systematic and safe transfer services for those in need. Conflictual situations at EU borders would be prevented without violating human rights either directly by installing camps or indirectly by outsourcing pullbacks in the Mediterranean to the Libyan coast guard.

Apply LGBTQ+ rights across all EU

When discussing human rights, the focus often tends to revolve around enjoying a high quality of life, good health, and abundant resources. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that LGBTQ+ rights are frequently overlooked in these conversations. Regrettably, certain European countries still struggle with pervasive hostility and discrimination towards gay, lesbian, and other LGBTQ+ individuals. It is imperative that we put an end to this situation. LGBTQ+ rights were established to be universally applicable across all countries in the European Union, rather than just a select few. LGBTQ+ people yearn for and require a sense of safety when traveling to any country for leisure purposes. We seek support and recognition, and we long for a return to peaceful lives. Furthermore, the EU should also do more to visibly show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. It is important to make us feel seen and safe and not like we are being excluded. For example now it is June, Pride month, the European Parliament could do more events, discussions or debates about LGBTQ+ and spread awareness even outside our community.

EU’s Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 Needs Reform

EU’s Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 Needs Reform   The suggestion of the strategy that 50:50 quotas are necessary to combat gender inequality since leadership positions must represent the demographic of the population is one which I find grossly undermining of our roles as individuals in society. It makes me question the perception of the intentions of men by the European Parliament itself. How can I confidently navigate the world as a woman when the strategies used to fight gender inequality only address surface-level outputs of misogyny and further propagate inequality?  It is my firm belief that there is a need for changing the approach to fighting gender inequality. Rather than focusing on artificially creating diversity in management and leadership positions, it is necessary to divert our attention to developing a strategy where gender equality is pursued on an individual basis rather than a legislative one. Equality of opportunity should be valued higher than equality of results, and ultimately the delegation of leadership and management positions should be based on merit and never gender.

Rights imply, or would like better, an individual’s obligations towards the state and society. The average age in the European Parliament should be lowered to hear people under the age of 25 by setting the age limit at 18 years. These people will follow the same political process, so there is no question of immaturity when someone is voted by almost 80.000 people in each. Rights are therefore only guaranteed by pluralism and the full potential of dialogue.

Lower voting age to 16

With the 2024 elections close to the European Parliament, the debate on the right to vote, democracy and politics becomes even more intense and much more intense among today’s youth,

With the 2024 elections close to the European Parliament, the debate on the right to vote, democracy and politics becomes even more intense and much more intense among today’s youth, a significant part of the population who is aware of the problems they face and who is active in a society that often lacks common sense, cohabiteism, etc. We therefore believe that the right to vote should be reduced to 16 years, following the example of some of the countries that are already implementing it. The reasons why this change would be beneficial to European society would be because the elections would have a better view of the interests of the population, bearing in mind that the young population is the largest and the most affected by the political choices made without taking into account their interests or benefits. Finally, another of the main reasons why voting at 16 would be an improvement for Europe as a society and an important step forward for European democracy is because by participating in elections, while their preferences and ideas can be taken into account, political participation as an additional citizen would allow them to understand what belonging to Europe means, the importance of elections and the role of democracy in a state like Europe.

Embrace an open-minded culture

By embracing an open-minded culture, we can create a better Europe that is more inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of their background or identity. We have the opportunity to learn from our past mistakes and build a brighter future together.

The world has experienced many wars, including the devastating first and second world wars in Europe. These wars were caused by a terrible disregard for human rights and a lack of respect for the Rule of Law and European democracies. Despite the laws and declarations of rights that have been put in place since then, we still see ongoing debates about issues that should be considered settled, such as equality, human rights, gender, racism, immigration, and more. To build a better Europe, we need a more open-minded culture that is willing to welcome people without prejudice. It is essential that we work towards a society where people of all backgrounds can live and thrive without fear of discrimination or hatred. This requires ongoing efforts to promote open-mindedness, respect for diversity, and a commitment to upholding human rights for all. By embracing an open-minded culture, we can create a better Europe that is more inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of their background or identity. We have the opportunity to learn from our past mistakes and build a brighter future together.

Fighting hate speech via an online platform

To counter the growing hate speech movement, we need an even stronger counter-movement. One possibility could be an online platform on which hate speech is documented, analyzed, and investigated.

There are people who intentionally or unintentionally create hate speech. While there are many people who are against hate speech and those who seek justice, we still need a global online platform to help. In one part of this platform, citizens will report all form of hate speech in this entirety; information will then be verified by a member of the central team and action should be taken by formal investigation in local or EU court. It could function as a way of sending a warning to offenders.

A lot of people, young or adult, are judged based on something they can't control or change. The idea of improving as the society while still not accepting some people that are slightly different is quite disturbing. European Union is so powerful exactly because we don't limit ourselves with these awful assumptions about individuals, thinking that they are less intelligent or less in general.

Karina Akmoldayeva  • 09 April 2023

This would be hard to implement due to the large volume of hate speech being produced every day. Another factor to consider would be how would we define hate speech, would it even be possible to come up with one definition of hate speech without directly infringing on one's right to freedom of speech?

Common foreign policy to control migrant flow and reduce dependence on regimes

Reliance on neighbouring autocrats is a risky proposition.

At the moment, the EU depends on neighbouring regimes in Libya, Turkey, Morocco, and elsewhere to help in reducing flows of migrants towards Europe.

This is risky: It opens the EU up to blackmail by authoritarian regimes and may lead to abuses conducted against migrants. To avoid this, the EU should significantly strengthen its capacity to make common foreign policy. It should gain the ability to project its interests further, using soft power where necessary to reduce migration flows at the source.

New external crises require a deepening of common policymaking, and an emphasis on prevention in advance of the causes of migration, rather than an excessive security-focused response to migration once it has taken place.

What are all social media? Does this only include profiles accessible to the public, such as a Facebook page, an Instagramp account, a Twitter post or even knives and chat rooms? In the second case, we have to ask whether, just in order to keep extremists silent, we want to waive postal secrecy for all others. In addition, a technical solution will lead to further de-empowerment of users. In a democratic society, people should not be censored by the platform to spread intrusive messages.

The European Council should be reformed in order to become a better European institution and contribute to a better-functioning European Union.

Ways to do so could include:

  • The European Council should be merged with the Council of the European Union into one council that is equated with the Parliament when it comes to lawmaking competence. This includes the right of initiative to propose new legislation.
  • It should consist of representatives from the national governments.
  • It should operate with a qualified majority on all policy fields including the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), which means that 55 % of the member states need to vote in favor, these member states should then represent 55 % of the European population.
  • The blocking minority (at least four member states representing more than 35 % of the EU population) should be abolished, while keeping the Ioannina Compromise.
  • The European Council should select one chairperson for a 5-year-period, who will lead the meetings and take care of the symbolic, ceremonial and diplomatic tasks of a state leader.
  • It should increase its transparency. Generally, all its meetings including those not concerned with legislation as well as those of its subordinate bodies (preparatory bodies and Coreper) must be public and live-streamed.

  • Each Member State nominates two candidates, the President then selects out of this pool. Parliament eventually votes on these candidates individually.

It should actually have no politics whatsoever, for representing political (and corporations interests when lobbied) there is already the Council and the Commission itself the way it currently operates, not only that but it should be time to actually make that long overdue EU Ethical Institution to oversee bribing, extreme lobbying or directly non disclosed lobbying and external activities (see the Commission scandal on the CSAM proposal or the ePrivacy Regulation).
At the same time, the Parliament should be given more weight and ‘questioned’ more often than it currently is, as it’s the only institution, that, at least as of now, really represents the interest of the citizens, meanwhile the Council represents the Government’s which, in turn, don’t even represent their own people or country but the lobbies’.

Make diversity normal

The European Parliament should focus more on promoting diversity in our society. We need more education and awareness on how to accept people with different backgrounds and with opinions that are different from our own.

Part of promoting diversity and inclusion is to no longer consider normal an adjective to strive towards. There is no standard human experience the same way there is no single European experience. Diversity and inclusion, particularly when it comes to those who have experienced different lives should be a priority in being a good European citizen.

Fight gender inequality in green activism

There is still a big gap between male activists and female activists in environmental issues. It is critical to encourage women's participation on this issue.

There is still a big gap between male activists and female activists in environmental issues, though our sometimes old fashioned mindsets prevent us from noticing said misbalance. It is important to enhance women's influence on the protection of the planet, as well as to create deeper understanding on how females approach the challenge of a sustainable future.

I agree with the statement. I believe that there should be complete equality between male and female activists because they both have the same goal. Protection of planet earth. They would be much better if they didn't think old-fashioned and separate men and women even in the protection of the environment. Together they would work much better.

Residence in Europe should be contingent on integration

Europe should demand that migrants make the effort to integrate– and help them in doing so.

For Europe to successfully manage immigration, strict minimum conditions should be introduced determining the extent to which every migrant should be expected to integrate themselves. Migrants should be made aware of these conditions upon arrival. Conditions should include making an effort to increase their language abilities; to find work; to participate in volunteer activities; and so on. Those who are not willing to accept and act on a commitment to these conditions –and especially those found to have committed crimes– should not be permitted to remain in Europe in the long term.

Of course, this requires that migrants have the opportunities to integrate themselves and to act to reach these conditions. The EU and Member States should therefore invest massively in supporting newly-arrived migrants and candidates for long-term integrated residency.

We need better education on human rights

Schools should integrate human rights into their curriculum. In order to become able to do so, teachers should be given relevant training and materials to empower this topic in the classoom.

Every student in Europe should know about their human rights and how to protect them. It is essential to organize campaigns in schools and universities, organize online webinars and prepare case studies for teachers and educators. Teachers should receive further training on this topic and policymakers must reinforce that by incorporating rights into education, everyone can benefit from an increased awareness of human rights.

Defenders of human rights need a higher level of support across the EU. We have to think globally and act locally and apply this method in member states.
