Carrying your hand bags with you on the airplane should be a right, not a surcharge

Ryanair charges 25€ in average for every small suitcase that you bring into the cabin. This is unacceptable! Bringing basic stuff when you travel is a necessity, not a luxury. On top of that, airlines should compensate passengers for executing such unfair practices in the past.

Article 7 of TEU is no longer sustainable

The present condition of Article 7 TEU has become untenable, as exemplified by the situations concerning Poland and Hungary. It is imperative to consider revising Article 7 TEU, particularly by reevaluating the requirement for an absolute majority during member states' voting. While it is indeed necessary for all member states to concur on treaty modifications, initiating a constructive discussion on this matter would be highly beneficial.

Give more power to citizens in elections with deliberative democracy

Introduce deliberative democracy in the EU!

Today at a workshop at the EYE, speakers mentioned different issues with the election – low number of voting participants, especially young people, disinformation, lack of understanding of complex legislation process in EU, risk for autocratic systems. David van Reybrouck wrote a book, "Against Elections", where he proposed deliberative democracy. One of his ideas is to form temporary commissions consisting of EU citizens instead of politicians. Such commission can represent people with different background and perspectives. Shouldn’t EU institutions adapt such deliberative democracy and be more open in legislative processes to give power to citizens themselves?

A connected Europe

It is key to have a rail system that connects all the major European cities and that is available through an universal ticket that works in all the member states. The purpose of the idea is to make Europe an even more connected and accessible continent. This will not only create further incentives to choose train over airplane, which will lower the carbon dioxide emissions, but it will also create a stronger cultural bond between Europeans.

More funding of night trains to make it more attractive than short haul flights

The EU should increase their  fund and support for night trains to make it more affordable and safe.

In order to reduce emissions in the transport sector, it should be more attractive to take the train (e.g. night train) in Europe instead of taking short haul flights. Increased funding and support from the EU could make night trains more affordable and safe – and then more people might use them instead of flying.

National EYEs should be celebrated as well to foster youth participation!

It would be interesting to have a type of EYE experience but at a national level. For example, having meetings, activities, plenaries with national politicians and activists at the National Assembly in order to get youth closer to politicians, to get to know them and create a space where everyone speaks up and shares ideas about national politics.

Allow more people to participate in multiple volunteering programmes

A volunteering programme should not just be a once in a lifetime experience.

Volunteering is an incredible program created by the EU, which lets young people from different countries abroad and learn more about what they want to become or other subjects they are interested. The main issue with this program is that they are a one time opportunity. I believe that volunteering should be supported more by the EU. People who have finished a long term volunteering participate in a new one, dividing the actual volunteering proposals for a first time volunteer and an experienced volunteer. This way people will talk more about this program and present it to young people to know about it.

Promote peacekeeping as the safest conflict resolution

It is important to consider the inclusion of all countries within the European Union, promoting a more accessible and affordable visa registration system for everyone. Collaboration among EU nations should be fostered to achieve this goal. Efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons should be prioritized, and increased peace talks should be encouraged, accompanied by the collaboration of peacekeeping forces with other countries. The ultimate aim should be the complete eradication of wars, with a comprehensive ban on guns and weapons across all nations. Peacekeeping forces and diplomatic discussions offer the safest and most effective approach to resolving conflicts and promoting peaceful resolutions.

Encourage volunteerism

The goal is to create a space where people in different stages of life can support others going through difficult times. Too many people are alone in their struggles, and this space would offer installation-type activities and services, such as healthcare and other resources, to encourage volunteerism. Despite skepticism from others, I'm currently working on a business plan to make this vision a reality. Throughout my life, I've helped many people overcome challenges and move forward. Some have questioned why I devote so much time to helping others, but I believe in the importance of supporting our fellow humans. Ultimately, I hope that everyone can lead a dignified and fulfilling life, with access to the support they need to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

I believe that the volunteering program should be more common to inform to young people in other countries in the EU, since in my country there was no information about this program. I would also like that the volunteering system kinda changes to let people who have already done volunteering of long term to do a short term (a solitary one, since I already know that group ones you are able to). And since this is a one time opportunity I believe that volunteering on long term should be allowed for people who have done one already, since I'm a volunteer and I know that many other volunteers would like to do another one even If it's not on the same country the did their volunteering on.

An EU-wide labelling scheme on PFAS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) are often associated with us. To prevent the negative effects of PFAS on our health and the environment, an EU-wide labeling requirement should be introduced. This would allow us to know whether the products we use contain PFAS, and whether they pose a risk to our health or the environment. PFAS have been linked to health risks such as cancer and liver injury, and they also pollute the environment, including groundwater. Due to their longevity, they can cause significant damage to the environment. Despite the known health and environmental risks, nothing has been done to prevent the use of PFAS. Therefore, my appeal is for an EU-wide labelling scheme to be implemented to increase transparency. This would provide us with the necessary information to make informed choices about the products we use, and encourage manufacturers to seek alternative, safer ingredients. Ultimately, this would help protect both our health and the environment.

Although I find this idea a bit difficult to concretize, I think that we could start by trains, since they seem to hold a very importante place for greener future. Therefore, the EU should think about rail connection between these countries and also supporting monetarily this type of constructions around countries if possible.

Jacques  • 10 May 2023

I am highly encouraged to take rail and I can't in europe — simply because of the price. If I book 3 months in advance sure, it's possible to find competitively-priced tickets for trains (i.e. Copenhagen > Stockholm). There are a number of mechanisms which could be implement, largely at the state level, following a directive (much like the NDCs for the Partis Agreement) to encourage the use of rail as opposed to planes:

- Increasing airport taxes + provide exemptions to rail companies and operators. However, additional rail capacity also needs to be considered with this — if
- Banning short-haul flights like France recently did, where rail was quicker than the the flight itself, as long as it was under two hours (from memory).
- The added complexity to this is that — whilst flying is absolutely one of the worst impacts an individual can have on the planet — how do we continue to deal with families that are spread out around the globe? So without a doubt, this would have to be done alongside an investment in renewable fuel and technological innovation for the aviation sector.

Aboveground and underground crosswalks.

Crosswalks should not be placed directly on roads - this puts pedestrians at risk of being hit by a car. Also cars have to stop if pedestrian wants to cross the road and again gain the crossing speed. This leads to higher exhaust pollution. If crosswalks would be underground or aboveground, then pedestrians would be much safer, and cars could run higher speed (like 70kmh instead of 50) polluting less CO2 and other toxic substances.

Crossings like this were common in the 1960s when there was a car paradise in the form of wide lanes, high speeds, etc. But now this has changed and there are a number of factors for this.
1) First, a city for people. The city should be comfortable for people, but not for cars.
2) Low mobility groups. About 30% of them are observed daily in any city, and these can be not only disabled people, but also cyclists. This is extremely inconvenient for them.
3) It is a myth that such transitions create security. As practice has shown, people simply cross the road and this creates more accidents.

Selma  • 10 June 2023

This would create insecurity in any case, how would you solve the problem of security in underground passages?

This is an automated translation. ()

This is a very good idea that I would add that the network of international connections and a single application or web portal for connecting and occupying trains would still be useful. An additional advantage would be immediate financial compensation from specific carriers for their timely arrival or other inconvenience.

Consumption trend campaigns for sustainable consumption

We need to change our consumption trends.

We need to change our consumption trends by focusing on buying ethically, locally and produced goods and seasonal fruits and vegetables. We must develop an effective system of sharing resources within a community.

For example, a good way of doing this would be to develop a system that allows citizens to borrow these objects from neighbours, friends or via online connections. There are already some small projects dedicated to this, but they could become more common and widespread with wider EU funding.

mental health pact

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that dealing with mental health issues is a luxury that not many people can afford. We need a mental health pact to organise our resources and tackle mental health issues within our global community. The continued uncertainty of 2020 and 2021 is compounded by the longer uncertainty of climate change. For this reason, it is necessary for the European Union to sign and promote a mental health promising to use resources to tackle mental health. We need to:

-         treat mental health in schools and teach children how to seek help for a variety of mental health issues

-         provide psychological support to vulnerable groups, such as those adversely affected by the pandemic and by climate change

-         subsidise treatment, including therapy

-         fund positions for more psychologists within national public health systems

The European Union as a federal state

It's not the EU versus its member states: It's a Union that should stand as one. Therefore, it is time to start talking about the EU as a federal state or confederation.

The European Union prides itself on the fiscal union and the free movement of people and goods. In other cases though, there are multiple different individual objectives and strategies which undermine the unity of the Union. It is therefore important to start talking about the EU as a federal state or even as a confederation – to exercise the strength of the unified collective, rather than a fragmented collective of different nations' voices.

This would also mean implementing a cohesive foreign policy, army, and economy as it would make the Union stronger on the international stage.

The EU needs a shared, universal healthcare system

All Europeans should have access to great healthcare, whether rich or poor. All countries must be equipped to provide this for their people. The EU needs a universal healthcare system.

It has been a year of turmoil for our healthcare systems amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Wouldn't it be a great source of resilience to hold EU Member States to a certain standard of healthcare and help to fund this throughout the region in the case of future virus outbreaks? The EU needs a universal healthcare system with a shared budget, to which all Member States contribute. This budget should service equal wages for healthcare workers and an equal level of care for all European citizens.

Disabilities in educational institutions

It is essential to raise awareness on disabilities at an early age in schools.

It already starts in school. In my class, there were students with disabilities (Down syndrome, Asperger's and others). Together we learned to discover the world, each on their own way, each with their own view. It did not matter that some of us learned different things than others. It did not matter that one student had an extra tutor. It didn't matter because we grew up being different. And I think that's exactly what you should be learning in school.

Better support for young people and kids

Governments and institutions need to listen more to young people and implement their suggestions in different policy areas:

  1. We should teach children in school how to live in such critical situations like a pandemic, and and how to act in dangerous situations, to protect oneself and others.
  2. We should give young people more opportunities to help others during a crisis.
  3. We should create intergenerational dialogue, where young people can help older generations and visa versa.
  4. Connect young people from different countries via online common classes in schools or vlogs, to share their daily reality and discuss how people live in different Member States.
